On October 29, 2024, educational events for schoolchildren, students, and teachers titled Days of Robotics and Innovative Education Technologies began in Zambia. The project is implemented by Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" in collaboration with Rossotrudnichestvo with the support of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Lusaka.
The program was opened at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) in the presence of honored guests: Director of the Department of Secondary Education of the Ministry of Education of Zambia Yvonne Mweemba Chuulu, Acting Director of the Distance Learning Department at NIPA Namakau Sinkala, Rector of the University of Zambia Professor Mundiya Muya, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Zambia Azim Yarakmedov, and Head of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Lusaka, Councilor, Svetlana Kovaleva.
"The history of friendly relations between Russia and Zambia spans 60 years, and throughout these years our relationship has only developed. I wish the ETU "LETI" team the successful Days of Robotics, and to effectively share experiences with colleagues from Zambia and establish strong friendships. To all students and schoolchildren, I wish you much new knowledge. Remember that you are the future of Zambia."
Anastasia Minina, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of ETU "LETI", discussed the initiatives of Russian universities aimed at implementing innovative educational technologies in African countries, highlighting projects from the First Electrotechnical University as examples.
"Our university collaborates with many countries in Africa and across the globe. We organize educational events and short-term educational programs aimed at equipping students and schoolchildren from Africa with the skills needed for successful admission to Russian universities, particularly in technical disciplines."
On the first day of the educational block, the "LETI" team delivered an engaging introductory presentation focused on innovative teaching methods for robotics and virtual reality technologies in schools and universities. This was followed by hands-on masterclasses for Zambian schoolchildren, students, and teachers, covering game development in virtual reality, robotic systems, and robot programming. Participants also took part in an exciting gaming tournament centered on mechatronics and robotics.
"The globalization of modern education demands close international cooperation, and our collaboration with the Russian government reflect the spirit of this process. This partnership has influenced the development of education in Zambia, especially in the field of robotics and technological innovations. Through to this collaboration, our students and educators have gained access to global experience and resources. The exchange of ideas, methodologies, and technical know-how has enriched our educational landscape and opened new horizons for Zambian learners."
Additionally, an exhibition showcasing the achievements of Russian robotics, as well as cultural and educational projects utilizing VR technologies opened at NIPA. Participants of the program were presented with an interactive map of Russian universities that train specialists for the future.
“The implementation of robotics and computerization extends beyond mere technological application. They contribute to the development of critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and practical skills that are essential for modern public servants. Our students do not just learn about technology; they are trained to apply it in addressing real societal challenges. NIPA is open to collaboration with partners at both local and international levels. Together, we can create a future where innovations serve the good of society."
A visiting program was held at the University of Zambia, during which a team from ETU "LETI" presented on "A Decade of Science and Technology in Russia" and delivered a lecture on innovative approaches to teaching robotics in schools and universities.
Additionally, representatives from the First Electrotechnical University discussed the robotic system "Duckietown" and conducted a masterclass on programming a mobile robot.
Days of Robotics and Innovative Education Technologies will continue until October 31, featuring practical classes and masterclasses focused on robotics and programming.
